2 Common Air Filter Mistakes You Should Avoid

repair

How’s your indoor air quality? It might surprise you to know that your air quality and your HVAC air filter go hand in hand. But there are some common mistakes many homeowners make with their air filters that can negatively impact the air in their homes. Here are two of the most common.

#1: Not Changing Your Filter

Your HVAC air filters are important to your heating and cooling systems. They keep dust, dirt, dander, pollen, and other airborne pollutants from entering your furnace and AC and causing damage. They also work to filter out those same pollutants to keep them from circulating throughout your home. If you don’t change your filter regularly, it can get clogged. When it’s clogged, air can’t pass through it. When clogged, it will stop catching pollutants, which means the air in your home is going to take a hit.

#2: Buying the Wrong Filter

Are you paying attention to the MERV rating on your air filters? This is the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It indicates how effective the filter is. The range is 1-20, and the higher the rating, the more effective the filter. Higher-rated filters will pull more dust, pollen, dander, mold, and other contaminants from the air in your home. Aim for a 9-rating or higher to get the biggest bang for your buck.

Your HVAC air filters are important. They help keep your air clean, and they help prevent damage to your heating and cooling systems. Want to know more? Contact the team at H.H. Hovey Heating and Cooling, Inc. for all the indoor air quality information you need.
