What to do AFTER an HVAC System Mold Treatment

HVAC System Mold Treatment

We’re no strangers to mold and mildew in the south, so understanding HVAC system mold treatment steps is essential. Here’s what you need to know, including what to do after an HVAC mold treatment.

HVAC System Mold Treatment Steps

Mold likes to grow in warm, damp environments, which is why the inside of your HVAC system is an ideal place for it to take hold. You don’t want to breathe mold spores, so it’s critical to clean the system out using these steps:

  • Turn off the power to the AC unit.
  • While wearing an N-95 respirator to protect from mold spores, remove the front vent on the unit or the back of the cabinet
  • Use a vacuum to remove any dust.
  • Clean the coils to make sure there isn’t any mold on them.
  • Use a combination of bleach and water to clean the surfaces inside the HVAC unit.
  • Change the air filter and throw the old one away.
  • Allow everything to dry before turning the unit back on.

What to do After an HVAC Mold Treatment

Once you remove all of the mold and treat the surfaces, the last thing you want is for the mold to return. With our humid climate, it could easily happen if the humidity inside your home is high. After mold treatment, a great way to avoid it coming back is by investing in a home dehumidifier. It will lower the relative humidity in your home, making it more comfortable while also reducing the chances of returning mold growth.
