My Gas Furnace Is Shutting off Too Often. What Should I Do?

Learn how to tell if you need heating services for your furnace.

No one wants to call for heating services. Of course, you want your furnace to run smoothly all the time. However, that’s not always the case. If your gas furnace is shutting off too often, what should you do? Here are some quick troubleshooting tips you can try before calling for service:

  • Clean or Replace the Filter
  • The air filter is there to protect your furnace. It keeps dirt, dust and debris from being sucked into the equipment during air intake. If your filter is dirty, there will be resistance when the furnace is pulling in the air. That will cause it to shut off the fan to protect the system from overheating. Cleaning or replacing the filter should solve the problem.

  • Oil the Moving Parts
  • If a dirty air filter isn’t the cause of the frequent shut-down of your furnace, the next thing to check is the blower motor port. Without proper lubrication, it can’t effectively run the blower, and that can cause the furnace to shut off instead of trying to run with a poorly running blower.

  • Check the Tension Belt
  • If the tension belt on your furnace is loose, it’s going to cause the fan to malfunction or to function poorly. A loose belt will result in your furnace turning off and on too often. Check the tension of the belt and adjust it if necessary.

If you aren’t sure where the air filter is, how to lubricate a blower motor, where a tension belt is, or how to tighten it, call in an HVAC technician. This is especially necessary if your furnace is turning off frequently instead of warming your home. For any and all heating services, no matter how big or how small, contact the team at H.H.
