How Can I Eliminate Loud Furnace Noises?

Learn how maintenance agreements can help you sleep at night.

Noisy Furnace is being inspected and repaired

If you’ve ever been kept up at night by loud furnace noises, you need to know about HVAC maintenance agreements. They can save the day, and night, when it comes to a noisy furnace. There are a few things that can cause your furnace to make sounds it shouldn’t, and a few ways to deal with them.

Squealing or High-Pitched Whining

If you hear something that sounds like a high-pitched whine or squeal, don’t ignore it. Sounds like that can’t be good! And it probably isn’t. It could be caused by a loose or frayed belt on the blower, which means it needs to be replaced. It could also happen if the blower motor isn’t functioning properly, which would require repair or replacement. Another cause could be that the moving parts in your furnace need lubrication. This would require a maintenance call by a technician.

Pops or Bangs

Do you hear a pop when your furnace turns on? The burners on your furnace could be dirty. If they’re dirty it can cause gas to build up and when the furnace starts and ignites, that excess gas can cause a loud pop or bang. Don’t ignore this! This requires immediate attention from a certified technician. If it isn’t repaired it could cause the heat exchanger to crack, which can result in a costly repair. Regular maintenance will help prevent dirty burners.

If you hear any sound that isn’t normal for your heating system, don’t sit around and wait for it to stop working. Call for service. And while you’re at it, sign up for a service agreement that can help prevent these types of issues in the first place with twice-yearly cleaning, maintenance, and inspection.
