Air Conditioner Not Blowing Cool Air? 3 Possible Reasons Why

Technician performing AC inspection

Lots of questions regarding heating and air conditioning always come up when they’re not working right. If your air conditioner isn’t blowing cool air, there could be many reasons why. Here are 3 of the most frequent possible causes:

Possible Reason #1: The Thermostat Isn’t Set Properly

This seems super simple, but the truth is it’s very easy to set your thermostat wrong. There are a couple of things to check if you’re not getting cool air. First, check the temperature. If someone reset it, or the programming was done wrong, it could simply be a matter of resetting it to the desired temperature.

If it’s not the temperature setting, the second thing to check is the fan setting. If the fan is set to “on” it will continually blow, even when the air conditioner is not blowing out cool air. This can make it appear that your air conditioner is not working properly. Reset it to “auto” and see if that fixes it.

Possible Reason #2: A Dirty Air Filter

If the air filter is dirty, the unit could overheat. When this happens, the system won’t blow out cold air. Try changing the filter and see if that fixes the problem.

Possible Reason #3: Dirty Evaporator

When the evaporator coil is dirty, it will prevent the unit from properly cooling the air. Cleaning the coils could help fix the problem.

No one wants to feel warm air blowing out from the air conditioner, in particular on a hot summer day. To prevent heating and air conditioning issues, or for a service call for repairs, contact the pros at H.H. Hovey Heating and Cooling today.
