If you’re making your spring-cleaning to-do list, don’t forget to put your heating and air conditioning system on it. You don’t need to be an HVAC technician to get the job done. Here are some tricks for cleaning you can do yourself.
1: Change the Air Filter
The air filter protects the equipment as well as your indoor air. It traps dirt and dust and keeps it out of the unit and out of the air. Changing it will keep your system running the way it should, and it will also help keep your house cleaner.
2: Clean the Condensate Drain
Your air conditioner creates condensation as it cools your home. That water goes down the condensate drain, unless it’s clogged. Clearing the drain will help keep the water flowing where it should instead of overflowing and causing a flood.
3: Clean the Evaporator Coil
There is an external coil that helps your air conditioner cool your home. When the coil gets dirty, it can’t do its job. Cleaning the coil will help increase its efficiency and effectiveness.
4: Clear the Way
If you have anything stored within two feet of your heating and cooling equipment, it’s time to clear the decks. Making sure nothing is up against the equipment will help it be more efficient. It will also make it safer.
