3 Reasons Why Your Furnace Is Always Running

Is your heating and air conditioning system always on the run?

There are worse things than when your heating and air conditioning system won’t shut off, but it can be annoying and costly. There are some potential issues you can look at to help determine why your furnace is always running. Here are 3 of them:

1. Temperature Setting

It’s possible your thermostat was set improperly. If the thermostat is set too high your furnace will continue to run until it meets the desired temperature. With a furnace, you’re likely to notice an overly warm house before you notice the system is running constantly, but take a look at your temperature setting first just in case.

2. Thermostat Issues

While you’re at your thermostat checking the temperature, there’s another thing you can check to determine if the cause of the running system is thermostat related. Take a look at the fan setting. If the fan is set to “on” then it’s going to keep blowing air, even if the heat isn’t on. Turning the fan to “auto” will set the fan to turn on only when the furnace is blowing warm air into your home.

3. Switch or Blower

If your furnace is running and running and running, and it’s not your thermostat, it could be a faulty switch or blower. If the limit switch isn’t functioning properly, it can’t signal the heating element to turn on and off in response to the thermostat commands. If this is the case, it needs to be replaced.

If the blower is going but you can’t find the cause, it could be that there is an electrical malfunction between the blower and the thermostat. This is going to need professional repair.

Although there are some simple troubleshooting steps you can take if you find your furnace seems to be running constantly, it’s possible it requires professional attention.
