3 Insider Tips for Troubleshooting Common Heating Problems

How you can troubleshoot heating problems before calling for emergency repairs.

Do I really need to call my HVAC company for emergency repairs? Aren’t there some issues I can fix myself?

So glad you asked. Yes, there is some simple troubleshooting you can do for common heating problems. Here are 3 tips on how to troubleshoot common heating problems straight from the insiders:

    1. The Air Is On, But There’s No Heat

This is one of the most common problems when it comes to heating systems. If this is happening in your home, the first thing to check is the thermostat. Make sure it’s set properly. It’s easy for it to get bumped or for someone to accidentally set it wrong.

The next thing to check is your air filter. If the filter is dirty or clogged, it’s going to impede airflow to the heating system. When this happens, the system can overheat and it will automatically shut down the heating unit to protect itself from damage and from potential fire.

    1. The Air Is On. All the Time

If the air is on all the time, but warm air is not blowing out, it probably means that the blower is running constantly. The main culprit is usually the thermostat. Check to make sure it is set to “auto” and not set to “on.” If it’s set to on, it will cause the fan to stay on whether or not the heat is running.

    1. The Furnace Turns On and Off, Then On and Off, Then On and Off

If your furnace turns on and off too frequently, it could indicate a problem. Before calling in for service, check the air filter. A dirty filter can cause short-cycling of your system because of blocked airflow. This can cause excessive wear and tear to your heating unit, and will also mean your home isn’t being effectively, which will make your indoor temperature inconsistent.

There are some common problems that happen with heating systems that you can troubleshoot yourself. If you aren’t finding a solution, it could mean it’s time to call in for backup. For emergency repairs, 24/7, contact the team at H.H. Hovey.
