The things that go bump in the night could be your heating and air conditioning system.
It’s the time of year for ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties, but not for a breakdown in your heating and air conditioning system. If you hear spooky furnace noises, don’t pretend they’re not there. Here are three reasons you might be hearing strange sounds from your heating system:
#1: Booming from the Basement
If your furnace booms when it turns on, it could indicate a buildup of gas, possibly from delayed ignition. Do not ignore a booming sound. This could indicate a serious and potentially dangerous problem. Call a professional HVAC technician to look at the furnace as soon as possible.
#2: Screeching and Grinding
While some abnormal screeching is not unexpected around Halloween, it’s not normal if it’s coming from your heating system. Screeching and grinding can often come from the belt or the bearings in the equipment. Friction from dirt or debris or a misaligned or damaged belt could cause bigger issues, and possibly a breakdown, if not repaired.
#3: Rattling and Rumbling
Rattling in a furnace could be an indication that there are screws loose or venting that isn’t attached properly. Sometimes it’s an easy fix if that’s the cause, but other times it could be a leak in your heat exchanger. This is a much more serious problem and requires professional attention as soon as possible.
Rumbling, on the other hand, could be dirty gas burners or a pilot light that requires adjustment. This resolves with a quick repair, but you can avoid it altogether with regular maintenance.
