What Happens If I Don’t Change My Air Filter Often Enough?

Ever had that feeling you were forgetting something important? HVAC maintenance agreements give your to do list a break.

Replacing an air filter for HVAC

Many of our Winston-Salem customers say they signed up for our Preferred Customer maintenance agreement program because they were glad to cross preventative maintenance tasks off their honey-do lists. They, like you, knew it was important to change their air filters frequently, but life can get busy. It’s easy to forget to do something so simple, even though remembering to do it can save you thousands of dollars in replacement costs.

You see, in order to protect the furnace, the filters need to be changed regularly, but it’s not as easy as that. It turns out that there are several different types and each one of them works differently and needs to be changed at different intervals.

How Air Filters Protect the Furnace

It’s the job of the filter to protect the furnace’s blower from grit, gunk, and dust sucked in through the return duct. If the filters get clogged, your furnace has to work harder to push the air out, which can cause damage. Anyone who has dogs and cats in the house or suffers from allergies will need to change their filters more often.

You might be astonished to see how many different types of furnace filters are on the market now. Which one is best for your system – and how often you need to change your filter, depends on the particulars of your equipment and household.

For instance, there are disposable fiberglass panels and electrostatic panels, which are supposed to be changed after one to three months. The more complicated filters with pleats usually last between three months and a year.

Even this simple task, replacing your filters, can be more complicated than just remembering to actually do it. That’s why you might want to invest in a maintenance agreement from H.H. Hovey. Not only will we take this task off of your plate, but you’ll also see other benefits including lower utility bills, longer equipment life, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ll be at the top of our priority list if you ever need repairs.
