When your heating or air conditioning is not operating properly, it can be hard to know whether or not you need a professional service call or if it can be a quick DIY fix. Here are 3 troubleshooting tips to help when your heating or air conditioning is on the blink.
1.Start at the Thermostat.
If you’re doing heating troubleshooting, turn the temperature on your thermostat 3 degrees above what the room temperature reads (For air conditioning troubleshooting, turn the temperature 3 degrees below the room temperature.) If the air does not turn on within 30-60 seconds, turn the thermostat off.
2.Next, Check the Furnace.
Check to be sure the furnace door panel is closed. Your furnace will not run with that door open or off. To reset your system to see if your heating or air conditioning will restart, reset the furnace. There should be a reset button just inside the door. Push it and wait 5 minutes.
3.Finally, Check the Filter.
If you have little or no air flow coming from your heating and air conditioning unit, check the filter. If the filter has not been changed or cleaned, it can block the flow of air and make your system falter.
