3 Reasons Why Your Furnace is Always Running

You can take some simple troubleshooting steps if you have issues with your heating and air conditioning. In the winter, a common problem is a furnace that seems to always be running. Here are three reasons that could be happening in your house.

#1: The Air Filter is Dirty

Your HVAC system needs to pull air into the equipment to warm the air before circulating back out through your vents. A dirty air filter obstructs your furnace. When this happens, your furnace has to work overtime to try to keep up with demands. It will keep running and running until your home is the desired temperature.

#2: The Thermostat is Set Wrong

If your thermostat is set too high, the furnace will keep running to try to get it to that temperature. You’ll probably notice your house is too hot before you notice your furnace is constantly running. It’s also possible you have the thermostat set to “on” instead of “auto.” When the setting is “on,” the fan will keep running even when the furnace isn’t, making it sound like the heat is on constantly.

#3: A Faulty Limit Switch

The limit switch controls the heat in your furnace. When the thermostat tells the switch it’s time to turn the heat on, the switch then signals the furnace. If the switch is faulty, the signals could be getting crossed, causing your furnace to run.
